  • The health of your mouth reflects the health of your body.
  • Brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least three times a week.
  • Bleeding gums are an indication of gum disease and need treatment.
  • Visit your dentist/hygienist every 6 to 12 months.
  • Avoid hard sucky sweets, fizzy drinks and snacking on sugary foods.
  • Cigarette smoking has been shown to increase the risk of developing gum disease and oral cancer.

Oral Hygiene: Tips for children

  • Brush your teeth twice a day, after breakfast and before bed.
  • Use very little toothpaste until a child is 3 years old.
  • Mum and Dad should help with brushing a child's teeth until they are at least seven years old.
  • Avoid hard sweets, fizzy drinks and snacking on sugary foods.
  • Never play rugby, hockey or gaelic football without using a gum shield.
  • A child's first dental visit should be when the child turns 3 years old.
